The KSN Radio Stack: Reliable Wireless Communication for Data-Intensive Applications in Sensor Networks

Sensor databases provide a database-like interface to query the information generated in a sensor network. Many queries can be processed in a distributed way to reduce resource consumption, but result sizes can increase beyond a few hundred bytes, and they have to be transmitted via multiple hops. Since the communication software shipped with Sun SPOT nodes has not been designed for such message sizes, communication-failure rates increase. We for our part have designed a new communication framework to make message delivery more reliable. In this talk, we will compare our framework to Sun SPOT default software. Furthermore, we will show that the reliable transmission of large messages over multiple hops is useful for the over-the-air deployment of software as well, a problem arising in many projects using Sun SPOTs. Short demonstrations will we be part of this presentation.
